Border Crisis: Lithuania's Fight Against Migrant Influx from Belarus (2026)

Border guards in Lithuania have successfully thwarted an attempt by a single migrant to enter the country via Belarus, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by the migration crisis. This incident occurred on December 16, as reported by the State Border Guard Service (VSAT).

The VSAT's efforts come as a response to the increasing number of irregular migrants attempting to cross the border from Belarus to Lithuania. As of December 17, 1,614 migrants have been prevented from entering Lithuania this year, a significant increase from the 1,002 migrants stopped in 2024. Since the crisis began in 2021, Lithuania has faced a total of 24,576 illegal border crossing attempts, showcasing the persistent nature of the issue.

This situation is not unique to Lithuania. Latvia's border service also denied access to one migrant attempting to enter the country illegally from Belarus on the same day. Meanwhile, Polish border officers reported no encounters with irregular migrants at their border with Belarus on Monday, according to ELTA. These coordinated efforts by border services across the region underscore the collective challenge of managing migration flows and ensuring border security.
