But here's where it gets controversial: Starmer's visit to China, the first by a British PM in eight years, follows a similar diplomatic outreach by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Both leaders are seeking economic gains and a strategic partnership with Beijing, which has been a key player in global affairs.
And this is the part most people miss: the underlying tensions between the US and its traditional allies. Trump's erratic trade policies and his pursuit of Greenland have strained relationships, pushing countries like Britain and Canada to diversify their alliances.
Starmer's engagement with China is a departure from the previous Conservative governments' approach, which had curbed Chinese investment over national security concerns and criticized the crackdown on political freedoms in Hong Kong.
