Get ready to dive back into the deep! After years of anticipation, the beloved aquatic adventurer, Ecco the Dolphin, is making a splash back into the gaming world. A&R Atelier has confirmed that not one, but several new Ecco products and games are currently in development, signaling a major comeback for the iconic character. This news is sure to thrill fans who have been eagerly awaiting Ecco's return.
"It has been years in the making and we're honored to bring Ecco back," shared Ed Annunziata, the Chief Creative Officer of A&R Atelier and the original creator of Ecco. He further elaborated on the core concept of the game, stating that "Ecco has always been more than a game about a dolphin—he's a bridge between worlds." This hints at the deeper, more philosophical themes that made the original games so captivating.
To keep fans in the loop, A&R Atelier has also launched an official Ecco the Dolphin Discord server, which serves as a community hub where fans and newcomers can connect with the developers. The community will receive exclusive updates, behind-the-scenes content, and early looks at what's to come.
Ecco's journey began on the Sega Genesis way back in 1992. His last adventure was in 2000 with Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future.
But here's where it gets controversial... Annunziata tried to crowdfund a spiritual successor, The Big Blue, back in 2013 with some of the original team. The project, however, only managed to raise $55,764 against a goal of $665,000.
Annunziata first hinted at the revival last year, stating in an interview that he and the original team would be remastering the original Ecco the Dolphin and Tides of Time games. Adding to the excitement, Sega renewed the trademark for Ecco last year.
