As the winter season approaches, hospitals across the Dayton region are taking proactive measures to safeguard patient health and prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses. Sarah Hackenbracht, president and CEO of the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association (GDAHA), announced that hospitals are implementing temporary visitor restrictions to protect both patients and healthcare workers.
The decision comes as a response to the surge in respiratory illness cases, including influenza, COVID-19, and other seasonal viruses. GDAHA reports that area hospitals and ambulatory care sites are experiencing higher-than-normal patient volumes with positive respiratory illness cases.
Here's the breakdown of the visitor restrictions:
No visitors with respiratory symptoms: This includes anyone exhibiting symptoms such as coughing, fever, chills, headache, vomiting, sore throat, muscle aches, or diarrhea. These symptoms can be indicators of various respiratory illnesses, and restricting visitors helps minimize the risk of infection.
No visitors under 14 years old: Even if they have received the seasonal influenza vaccine or will receive the appropriate vaccine when available, children under 14 will not be allowed to visit hospitals. This measure is taken to protect vulnerable patients and reduce the potential for exposure.
Hackenbracht emphasized that these decisions are not made lightly, as they understand the importance of family support for patients. However, the measures are necessary to curb the spread of illnesses and support healthcare teams in their efforts to care for patients across the region.
The visitor restrictions are temporary and will be regularly reviewed based on illness trends and hospital conditions. Exceptions may be made for pediatric patients, labor and delivery, end-of-life care, and other special circumstances. GDAHA encourages visitors who are permitted to follow hospital guidance, including hand hygiene and masking when requested, to ensure a safe environment for all.
