That's the reality for Imran Khan, and new details are emerging about his life behind bars. Islamic scholar Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza, recently released from Adiala jail, has provided a rare firsthand account of the former Prime Minister's conditions, challenging the often-polarized narratives from both the government and Khan's own party, PTI.
Mirza's account, shared in an interview on Geo News, paints a picture that's more nuanced than the extreme claims we've been hearing. But here's where it gets controversial... Mirza says that both the government and PTI are exaggerating when describing Khan's jail conditions.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023, serving sentences related to multiple cases and facing trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) stemming from the May 9th protests. Mirza, who was surprisingly placed in a cell right next to Khan's, revealed some unexpected details about his living situation.
According to Mirza, Khan isn't crammed into a tiny cell. Instead, he's been allotted six cells, each measuring approximately 10 by 12 feet. One cell is used by his orderly (mushaqati), another serves as his living quarters, and the remaining cells function as storage space, giving him significantly more room than the average inmate. This immediately contradicts the image of solitary confinement that's often been portrayed.
"Imran Khan is extremely frustrated inside," Mirza stated plainly, suggesting that anyone would feel the same after two years in such a situation. He recounted an incident where a bishop was moved from a cell near Khan because his cough was disturbing the former PM's sleep. Mirza also described Khan's daily routine, noting that he would have breakfast around 9 am and often converse with his orderly, frequently about cricket. And this is the part most people miss... the seemingly mundane details offer a glimpse into Khan's mental state and how he's coping with confinement.
Mirza was careful about what he shared, stating that "People are twisting narratives," and he only wanted to disclose what the public could handle. He mentioned the distinct aroma of 'desi ghee' emanating from Khan's lunch preparations around 3 pm and confirmed that Khan has access to television and newspapers, keeping him informed about the outside world.
During the period of the "tweets case," Mirza noted that Khan was visibly angry and often spoke loudly. While he overheard many conversations, he refrained from divulging specific details, fearing it could create further problems for Khan or lead to accusations from PTI that he was simply repeating existing claims.
Despite the frustrations, Mirza praised Khan's resilience and urged the public to pray for him, admitting that he himself did so while incarcerated. He directly challenged the narrative of Khan's complete isolation, stating, "When I went inside, I realised they were lying when they claimed he was kept isolated. It is a well-known place." He declined to specify the exact location for security reasons, hinting that many prominent figures have occupied those cells before.
Mirza also confirmed that Khan receives basic amenities, including nuts, juices, and access to news via an LED screen – facilities that are reportedly available to other inmates at Adiala jail as well. A former student of Mirza's, who works at the jail, corroborated the fact that high-profile inmates receive two newspapers and regular medical check-ups, a process that Mirza himself underwent.
