Australian teen racer Joanne Ciconte is on a mission to conquer the world of motorsports, and her next stop is Japan. But is this young talent biting off more than she can chew? With her sights set on the ultimate F1 dream, Ciconte is taking a leap of faith.
At only 17, Joanne Ciconte has already achieved what many racers can only dream of. Her journey began in karting, where she dominated as a junior. But the real adventure started when she transitioned to single-seater race cars in 2024, marking a significant milestone in her career.
Last year, Ciconte, alongside fellow Aussie Aiva Anagnostiadis, made history as the youngest driver in the all-female F1 Academy series. But her ambitions are far from satisfied. With her eyes firmly fixed on the prestigious Formula 1, Ciconte is making a bold move to Japan, hoping it will propel her to the top.
The Kyojo Cup, an all-female formula racing series at the iconic Fuji Speedway, will be her battleground this season. Ciconte secured her spot on the grid with a stellar performance during a December test and will represent team KCMG in this 10-race series.
"Japan, here I come!" exclaims Ciconte to ABC Sport. "I'm thrilled to be part of one of the best teams on the grid, and I can't wait to see what we can achieve together this year. I'm aiming high and expecting great results." But is this confidence misplaced?
Ciconte is vocal about her aspirations to race in the world's top series, with F1 as the ultimate goal. Her move to Japan is a strategic step towards this dream. The young racer aims to secure a place in Super Formula, a Japanese open-wheel series that has launched the careers of several F1 drivers.
Liam Lawson, Pierre Gasly, and former McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne all honed their skills in Super Formula before graduating to F1. "Super Formula is the next best thing to F1," Ciconte believes. "It's a crucial stepping stone, and I see it as a significant part of my future in the next few years." But is this path as straightforward as it seems?
Ciconte's 2026 schedule also includes two rounds of the AU4 championship, starting at Winton Raceway in May and continuing at The Bend in August. Despite moving on from the F1 Academy, Ciconte reflects on her 2025 experience as a valuable foundation for her racing career.
"The F1 Academy was an incredible journey. Experiencing life as an F1 driver, the constant travel, and the unique atmosphere at each race was eye-opening. It was a challenging yet fun season, with some tough moments, but that's the nature of motor racing. I loved every minute of it!" Ciconte's enthusiasm is infectious, but is her optimism justified?
The 2025 season also taught Ciconte the importance of professionalism in motorsports. Her rigorous training routine, including two daily workouts and simulator sessions, has kept her in top racing form since the F1 Academy. She has also mastered the art of handling the pressure that comes with international competition.
"The biggest challenge was staying mentally focused and not getting sidetracked by distractions," Ciconte reveals. "Going from local races to the global stage at major F1 events was a massive leap. Being surrounded by motorsport enthusiasts and racing under intense pressure at a young age has been a valuable lesson in resilience." But will this resilience be enough?
Ciconte and her team are confident that her preparation will pay off, giving her the edge in her upcoming campaigns. With her first racing weekend at the AU4 championship just two months away, followed by her Japan debut in the Kyojo Cup, the world is watching to see if this young racer can navigate the twists and turns of her ambitious journey.
