Imagine waking up to a day without water, a basic necessity we often take for granted. This is the reality for residents in Waterbury and its surrounding areas, as an unexpected water main break has left them high and dry.
The break, occurring near Thomaston Avenue, has disrupted water supply to major parts of the city and nearby towns. Hospitals and emergency services are now relying on water trucks to maintain operations, a challenging situation for all involved.
City officials, led by Mayor Paul Pernerewski, are working tirelessly to address the issue. They've announced a plan to distribute water to residents, setting up drive-through distribution centers and a localized system for those without vehicles. The mayor also highlighted the city's efforts to seek state assistance, with contact established with Governor Ned Lamont.
But here's where it gets controversial: the water main in question is over a century old, and fixing it could take several days. An update from the city described the situation as "critical," stating that the 36-inch transmission main, a very old section of pipe, had failed.
Crews have been working on the water main for at least three days, but there's no estimated timeline for when it will be fixed. As of 8 a.m. on Saturday, city officials couldn't provide an answer.
The impacted areas include low-lying neighborhoods along the Naugatuck River, stretching as far east as Hamilton Park, and much of the downtown area. The mayor did provide some relief, stating that a 12-inch gravity pipe feeding these low-lying neighborhoods is working, allowing residents to use their toilets. However, other parts of the city may face a longer wait, as the flooded area is filled with debris, and parts needed for repairs could take a few days to arrive.
Mayor Pernerewski emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, "This is a serious infrastructure failure, and our priority is protecting public health and safety while restoring service as quickly as possible."
Water Superintendent Brad Malay added, "When the water main failed, the situation escalated quickly."
Hospitals and critical care facilities are prepared with water trucks to ensure continuity of service. Fire officials are also ready to call for mutual aid from other towns if needed.
St. Mary's Hospital, for instance, has activated its emergency management plan, deploying potable water and portable sinks to ensure patient safety. Stephanie Valickis, regional communications manager for Trinity Health of New England, which runs the facility, said, "An alternate water supply is being arranged to support essential operations, as maintaining safe patient care remains our priority."
The hospital has sufficient water pressure to run essential functions, including heating, according to Valickis.
Residents whose water service is disrupted are advised to boil their water once it's restored. Further instructions on the water boil advisory will be issued when restoration begins.
This infrastructure failure serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining and upgrading our water systems. It's a complex issue with no easy solutions, and it's one that affects us all.
